Hi everyone. My name is Andre Iwanchuk. I'm the Business Librarian here at KPU. In this library tutorial, I'll show you some of the key features of the CARD – The Canadian Advertising Rates and Data – online research database. CARD Online is an essential resource used by Canadian media buyers, planners, and researchers. It provides advertising rates, circulation data, and contact details for various media companies operating in Canada. It's an excellent source for advertising, marketing, PR, and communications projects. Starting at the Library homepage at kpu.ca/library we'll navigate to CARD Online by clicking on the Research Databases tab. And then under the red magnifying glass, clicking on the Research Databases A-Z hyperlink. This brings us to a list of more than 200 research databases we have access to here at KPU. We can use the All Subjects menu and select Business. This takes us to a list of all the business research databases. We'll scroll down and click on the hyperlink for CARD Online. When off campus, You'll be asked for your KPU username and password. And now we're at the homepage of the CARD Online database. When using CARD online from off campus, do not click Sign in. You are automatically signed in through your KPU student number and password. CARD Online provides advertising rates, circulation data, and contact details for most major media companies in Canada. Let's say you need to develop a media plan where you have to figure out the best way to reach your target audience, while also paying attention to your overall costs. This is where CARD Online is an extremely useful tool. I'm going to show you some general tips for doing searches. To search, we can type a keyword in the Keywords field. We can also select a specific media category from the drop-down menu. Let's do a search for food across all categories. And then we click on the red magnifying glass. And now we see our search results for food in the main CARD Online research interface. To refine our search results, we can select our filters from the left side Filter results menu. Let's look for Magazines, based in British Columbia, and we can filter for City or CMA – which is Census Metropolitan Area. Let's choose CMA so that we can search the entire Greater Vancouver area. Once we've selected the filters, make sure to click on Filter results. And here we see our results. We can also click on More to view a complete list of search filters within a specific category. In this case, let's add another Census Metropolitan Area – Greater Victoria – to our search. We'll click on Search, To view a listing from the search results, we click on the hyperlinked title. We can navigate to a specific section by clicking on one of the menu items such as Contacts. The most useful is Advertising Info & Rates. Here we see all the rate cards that outline the pricing options for different sized ads, if we're looking to run a print ad in Taste Magazine. This is the exact sort of information that's very difficult to find if you're just browsing online. Again, CARD Online is the actual resource that's used by advertising and marketing industry professionals in Canada, when they're looking for this type of information. This is very helpful when pricing out media campaigns. There's other useful information such as Circulation, which tells us how many copies of the magazine are printed for each issue. So that's how we search for information using the CARD Online database. Another useful feature in CARD Online is the CARD News section. If we click on the hamburger menu on the left side of the page and click on News, we get to the CARD News section. This is an excellent resource for finding the pulse of the Canadian advertising and media industry. It's always a good idea to take a look at these articles. I hope this video provides you with a starting point for searching the CARD Online database. And remember, CARD Online is the actual tool used by major advertising agencies and marketing professionals. It's a great database to help you create a realistic media buying plan for any of your projects.
